Salt air is hard on coastal wiring.
Right along the Illawarra coast — Fairy Meadow, Thirroul, Corrimal and the beachside pockets of Wollongong — salt-laden air corrodes outdoor wiring, meter boxes, terminations and cheap fittings far faster than inland. We see rusted enclosures, green corrosion on connections and failing weatherproof seals constantly. On every outdoor job we use corrosion-rated enclosures, marine-grade glands and proper IP-rated fittings so the work lasts — not the cheapest part that fails in three summers.
Ageing steel-town housing has tired switchboards.
Much of the Illawarra’s established stock — the post-war homes of Corrimal, Mayfield-style worker cottages and original Wollongong houses — still runs on ceramic rewireable fuses with no safety switches at all. Those boards can’t protect anyone from a shock and weren’t built for air-con, induction cooktops, solar or EV charging. Upgrading to a modern board with RCDs is the first thing we recommend, and under the Wiring Rules a board replacement now triggers RCD protection on every circuit.
EV and solar uptake is changing the load.
The Illawarra has strong solar and EV uptake, especially in the Dapto growth corridor and the larger blocks around Figtree. Adding a 7kW home charger or a solar and battery system puts real new load on the switchboard, and it has to be installed with the right dedicated circuit, RCD protection, load management and Ausgrid notification. We check the board’s spare capacity before we quote so you don’t end up with a charger that trips the house every time the oven is on.
