Electrical safety inspections across Wollongong & the Illawarra.
Buying, renting out, or just want to know your home is safe? We carry out electrical safety inspections across the Illawarra — checking switchboards, safety switches (RCDs), smoke alarms and wiring against NSW law and the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules, with a clear written result and any faults rectified. Licensed, methodical, no scare tactics.
What an electrical safety inspection covers.
The checklist we work through.
A proper inspection is methodical. We check the switchboard condition, whether safety switches (RCDs) are present on the circuits they should be, and trip-test them; we check circuit-breaker ratings and labelling; we look at smoke-alarm type, placement and age; and we go over visible wiring, power points, switches, earthing and any obvious hazards like scorching, exposed conductors or non-compliant DIY work. You get a clear written summary of what’s fine, what’s a risk, and what needs fixing.
Rental compliance (landlords & agents).
NSW rental properties need RCD protection on power-point circuits and a working smoke alarm on every level (AS 3786 photoelectric type; hardwired and interconnected in homes built or substantially renovated after May 2006). Since March 2020, landlords and agents must keep alarms working at all times, fix or replace a faulty alarm within two business days, and replace alarms within 10 years of manufacture. We check the lot, rectify what’s needed, and give you documentation for your records.
Pre-purchase electrical checks.
Before you buy — especially an older Illawarra home — it pays to know what the wiring is really like. We tell you whether the board has safety switches, whether the wiring is sound or due for replacement, whether the smoke alarms comply, and whether there’s any unsafe DIY work behind the walls. An old ceramic-fuse board with no RCDs can be a serious cost after settlement, so it’s far better to find out before you sign.
Smoke alarms & RCDs done right.
Smoke alarms and safety switches are the two things that actually save lives, so we don’t treat them as a box-tick. We fit the correct photoelectric alarms in the right places, interconnect them where the rules require, and make sure every circuit that should be on an RCD actually is — then test that the RCDs trip. If yours don’t, that’s a fault we fix, not a number we write down.
Why we don’t cut corners.
An inspection is only worth anything if it’s honest and complete. We won’t rubber-stamp a board that has no safety switches, gloss over tired wiring, or invent problems to pad an invoice. You get the real picture, the genuine safety risks flagged clearly, and a fair price to fix what matters — so you can make a decision with the facts in front of you.
Faults found in an inspection are often a board issue — see switchboard upgrades — and anything urgent we can attend as an emergency callout. We work right across Wollongong and the Illawarra.
