The best time for an Illawarra switchboard upgrade is autumn or spring
For planned switchboard upgrades, April-June and September-October are usually the smoothest windows in Wollongong and the Illawarra. You avoid the worst storm interruptions, peak holiday delays and summer heat load. Do not wait for a better month if the board is hot, buzzing, wet, burnt or repeatedly tripping.

Why autumn and spring win here
Switchboard upgrades are not just indoor work. Many Illawarra homes have meter panels and main boards on outside walls, in carports, under eaves or in older meter boxes that face weather. The electrician needs safe dry access, space to work, enough light and a predictable power-off window. Autumn and spring usually provide that without the worst heat, rain or holiday pressure.
April, May and June are good because summer load has eased, families are back in routine and winter moisture problems are about to show up. If your board has ceramic fuses or only partial safety switch protection, upgrading before winter can prevent nuisance trips and emergency callouts. September and October are good because they sit before peak air conditioning, renovation and EV charger demand.
Prices do not usually drop just because it is May instead of November. Electrical parts, labour and compliance requirements are the same. What changes is diary pressure. When a storm has pushed water through outdoor fittings across Bulli, Thirroul and Corrimal, urgent faults take priority. A planned upgrade booked in a calmer month is easier to schedule and less likely to become a rushed decision.
Lead times for different switchboard jobs
A simple board tidy or one-device replacement can often be handled quickly if parts are on hand. A full domestic switchboard upgrade is different. It may require a site inspection, circuit count, asbestos backing check, enclosure choice, RCD or RCBO design, labelling plan and Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work.
If the job involves service mains, metering, disconnection, reconnection or network-side work, allow more time. As a practical rule, allow 1 week for a straightforward quote and parts booking, 1-3 weeks for a normal planned upgrade, and 2-4 weeks where Level 2 ASP, metering or supply upgrade questions need to be resolved. Emergency make-safe work is handled separately. The permanent upgrade can then be booked when the hazard is controlled and the scope is clear.

When not to wait for the perfect month
Seasonal planning is for safe boards that are due for improvement, not dangerous boards. Do not wait if you see burn marks, smell heat, hear buzzing, find water inside the enclosure, receive a network defect notice or lose power repeatedly. Those are same-day or same-week issues. Do not wait if a renovation is about to cover walls or ceilings. It is cheaper to upgrade circuits, RCD protection and board layout before plasterboard, cabinetry and tiles are finished. The same applies before solar, batteries, heat pump hot water, induction cooking or home office upgrades. If the board is already full, every new load becomes harder.
One honest constraint: if your switchboard is modern, dry, labelled, compliant and has enough spare capacity, you may not need to upgrade this year. A safety inspection may be enough to confirm it. Spend the upgrade money when there is a real trigger, such as ceramic fuses, no RCD protection, EV charging, repeated faults or insurance and sale paperwork pressure.
